Male sexual dysfunctions occur at any age but are markedly common in men over 40 years. A lot of the factors that contribute to these problems affect older men.
For instance, underlying health issues such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, stress, and anxiety greatly interfere with male sexual activity. This is why more than half of middle-aged and older men experience erectile dysfunction (ED).
With this being a common problem, countless ED medications are in supply, ranging from traditional to modern options.
But not all of these are genuinely helpful. Thus, the choice of medication for erectile dysfunction could help you improve or complicate the problem further.
That said, you do not want to go wrong with the choice of ED treatment.
Read ahead to discover more about Tadalafil (Cialis) and its appropriateness in treating your erectile dysfunction.
What is Tadalafil?

Tadalafil (Cialis) is an oral tablet typically prescribed for male patients with erectile dysfunction.
Classified under phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors, its mechanism of action involves increasing blood flow to the penis to induce sexual stimulation. This helps men with ED get and maintain harder erections for sexual activity.
The drug comes in both original and generic versions. While the original version bears a higher price tag, both versions have the same active ingredients hence a similar effect.
Other Uses of Tadalafil
Other than the treatment of erectile dysfunction, Tadalafil also doubles as a treatment option for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH (enlarged prostate) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Aging in men brings forth several physiological changes, among them an enlarged prostate. When the prostate grows bigger, it squeezes the urethra to the extent of causing difficulties or pain when passing urine.
Tadalafil is used to treat symptoms of this condition by enhancing the relaxation of smooth muscles around the prostate and the bladder.
As a result, it relieves patients from difficulties urinating, painful urination, or having a weak stream of urine flow.
Furthermore, Tadalafil (Adcirca) has the ability to induce a relaxing effect on blood vessels carrying blood to the lungs (pulmonary arteries). In other words, the arteries become wider and less resistant to blood flow.
Therefore, taking Tadalafil effectively reduces high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. This is how it manages to treat patients with PAH.
How Should Tadalafil (Cialis) be Used for Erectile Dysfunction

If you are taking tadalafil to treat erectile dysfunction, your doctor will determine the kind of prescription based on your symptoms. Tadalafil tablets come in doses of 20 mg, 10 mg, 5 mg, and 2.5 mg.
Typically, the prescription will either be once a day or “as needed“. If you are prescribed to take the medicine once a day, it’s advisable to take it around the same time every day. You can then attempt sexual activity anytime.
For “as needed” prescriptions, you will be required to take the medicine at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. In case you forget to take a day’s tadalafil dose, do not compensate by taking two doses around the same time.
Simply ignore the missed dose and start over by taking the next dose. Tadalafil tablets should be taken whole without breaking them into pieces.
Remember to always follow your doctor’s directions for taking tadalafil or any similar medications.
Precautions When Taking Tadalafil
Avoid drug interactions-Do not use tadalafil alongside nitrate drugs for chest pain and heart problems or recreational drugs called “poppers”. The combination with other drugs can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.
Avoid grapefruit juice– It prevents the breakdown of tadalafil, leading to increased levels of the drug in the bloodstream.
Avoid alcohol– Alcohol reduces blood pressure, and so does tadalafil. If taken together, the result can be too low blood pressure.
Can Women Take Tadalafil (Cialis)?
Since Tadalafil (Cialis) is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction, it is not meant for use by women. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves the use of Cialis in men but not in women.
Unfortunately, no clinical trials have been conducted to test its safety and effectiveness in women. Despite all these, Cialis prescription for women is possible but only on an off-label basis.
How Long Does Tadalafil (Cialis) Stay in your System?
It takes about 30 minutes for Cialis to take effect, and the effect may last up to 36 hours. During this period, you can get an erection, have sex and then lose the erection normally after sex. If you have a prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours, talk to your doctor to get help.
